"Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck is a classic novella that tells the story of two migrant workers, George and Lennie, as they struggle to survive during the Great Depression. Set against the stark landscape of rural California, the novel explores themes of loneliness, isolation, and the struggle for the American Dream. Through its vivid characters and poignant prose, "Of Mice and Men" offers a powerful commentary on the human condition and the universal desire for connection and belonging. It has universal themes that can be read in any culture and time. John Steinbeck wrote of lessons of the heart, lessons that teach children what it is to be a human being with compassion for his fellow humans and a social conscience."[1] Join me in discovering what makes this book worth recommending!

1) American history—the harsh realities of life during the Great Depression

The illustration by Steinbeck of the epic era in American history known as the Great Depression is brilliant and genuine and creates an authentic image of the times. Having the ability to read an entertaining work of literature, while being immersed in such a real setting, is a valuable history lesson for all those that choose to partake. Much can be gained from reading what life was like for an average person in this era and being able to recognize the impacts it had on individuals as well as the Country as a whole. Steinbeck does an astounding job of appropriately depicting the era and creating a way for his readers to be engaged with it. This on its own is a reason this book should be read[2].

2) The power of friendship and human connection

"Of Mice and Men" tells the story of two friends, George Milton and Lennie Small, Small, who share a deep and powerful bond despite their differences. George and Lennie's friendship is an unusual one, as Lennie is a mentally disabled man who often relies on George for guidance and protection. Despite this, George is fiercely loyal to Lennie and goes to great lengths to ensure his safety and well-being. Through their friendship, the novella illustrates the power of human connection and the positive impact that it can have on people's lives. George and Lennie's friendship provides them with a sense of purpose and belonging, and helps to alleviate the loneliness and isolation that they might otherwise feel.

3) Discrimination and Inequality

The novella also offers a commentary on the ways in which discrimination and inequality operate in society, especially in relation to race, gender, and disability. Through the character of Crooks, an African American stable hand, Steinbeck shows the effects of institutionalized racism and the limitations that it places on people's lives.

4) The Power of Loneliness

While "Of Mice and Men" highlights the negative impact of loneliness, it also shows the power and resilience of individuals who are able to endure it. The novel illustrates how loneliness can be a catalyst for personal growth, self-reflection, and the pursuit of personal goals. For example, the character of Crooks, a black stable-hand who is isolated from the other workers due to racial segregation, uses his loneliness to cultivate his intellect and education. He has a small collection of books in his room and spends his free time reading and expanding his knowledge. His isolation allows him to think deeply and critically about the world around him, and he becomes more self-aware and insightful as a result. the novel shows readers that while loneliness can be painful, it can also be a powerful motivator and can help individuals discover new strengths and passions within themselves.
